A new study by researchers at the University of Minnesota has found that Seroquel XR was more effective at controlling the manic episodes than the placebo.

“The benefits of Seroquel XR are pretty significant," said study author Dr. Michael A. Marzillo, an assistant professor of psychiatry and neurology at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.

Seroquel XR was prescribed to people with bipolar disorder (manic episodes or manic episodes) but was not approved for use in that condition. Doctors prescribed it for patients who were experiencing manic episodes but did not experience any side effects. It was given to people with manic episodes in either a controlled, or placebo environment.

“The main benefit we see is that the patients who are more manic have a higher rate of remission with Seroquel XR and this has been shown to reduce the severity of the manic episodes, which is why Seroquel XR was chosen," said study author Dr. David L. Gersbach, director of the University of Minnesota’s Clinical Research Institute.

“Our findings show that this drug may also have some benefits for patients who are in an optimal setting where their symptoms are controlled by their usual treatment regimen and who have improved mood through treatment,” Gersbach said.

A clinical trial, published in the October 2019 issue of Clinical Psychiatry, will run for one year. Results will be published online in the December 2022 issue ofPsychopharmacology.

The researchers said they are still evaluating the results of the trial and hope to be able to carry out more clinical trials on Seroquel XR.

Seroquel XR can only be taken in one dose, and it is not an atypical antipsychotic drug. It is also not a mood stabilizer. Patients taking the drug will not experience any side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, or sedation.

The study was published in the January 2019 issue ofResearchers used a new technique called “comparison of treatment,” which compares treatment groups and compares their responses to those who received the drug to those who received the placebo. The goal is to find out who is most effective and who is least effective at controlling manic symptoms.

In the study, researchers found that people who took Seroquel XR had less manic symptoms, and those who took the drug were more likely to have decreased interest in activities. The drug did not have any significant effect on the rates of bipolar episodes.

“When we looked at the drug’s effects on mood in people who took it, we found that the patients who had more of the drug had more episodes. So it really seemed that this drug was more effective at controlling those symptoms. It seemed to work in a different way,” said Marzillo. “It may be possible to change this or that effect, but it’s still a very small effect."

The researchers also found that Seroquel XR was more effective at controlling the manic symptoms of patients who were experiencing atypical antipsychotics. “We can say that is because it is more likely to be effective in patients who do not have atypical medications, but it does come with a small effect.”

A more recent study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that the drugs that helped people control bipolar symptoms were not effective at controlling the manic symptoms of bipolar disorder. The drug was not effective at controlling the manic symptoms of people who are not taking typical antipsychotics.

“When you are using the drugs that have been proven to be effective in bipolar disorder patients, they have been proven to be ineffective in controlling symptoms of that disorder,” said Marzillo. “When you are using the drugs that have not been proven to be effective in bipolar disorder patients, they are also proven to be ineffective in controlling symptoms of this disorder.”

More than 2,500 people treated in the study were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or Seroquel XR. The researchers also compared the effectiveness of the drugs to those who did not receive the drug.

“The results were striking,” said Gersbach, who is a clinical professor of psychiatry and neurology and chief investigator of the study.

He said his team’s work is consistent with previous research showing that antipsychotic medications can be effective in controlling symptoms of bipolar disorder. However, his study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Health and the Veterans Affairs Health MVP program.

Seroquel (quetiapine) is a type of prescription medication called an antipsychotic drug. These medications often treat conditions that can cause psychosis or losing touch with reality, but they also help with different kinds of depression and anxiety—especially when first-line treatments aren’t enough.

There are two types of antipsychotic drugs. “Typical” antipsychotics refer to the first generation of these drugs, which were developed in the 1950s. “Atypical” antipsychotics, which were introduced in the 1990s, are considered second-generation drugs. They are just as effective as typical antipsychotics but are much less likely to cause complications such as movement and motor control problems.

Seroquel (Quetiapine) is a type of medication called a atypical antipsychotic. It can be bought for use with or without food. Atypical antipsychotics, on the other hand, are for use only with quetiapine.
